CBF Morning Run: Fast-casual Asian having its moment
A growing rice and noodle bowl franchise is getting its first Central Ohio shop. Denver-based Teriyaki Madness has more than 40 restaurants in 14 states with franchise commitments for about 100 more.
Local franchisee Helena Abidin was pursuing a career in medicine before she decided business was more to her liking.
“My entire family is in medicine, so I felt a bit of an obligation to follow that,” she said. “But my passion was business.”
She sold her parents on the career shift and the 25-year-old set to work researching the world of franchised restaurants.
“I knew I wanted to be in restaurants,” she told me. “I didn’t want to be in retail or do a trendy massage place. Everyone needs to eat. Eating isn’t a trend.”
Abidin spent months researching options, looking for a match that would fit her tastes and skills and, possibly, be a new name to Central Ohio. She found it in Teriyaki Madness, which has been around since 2003 but is in the midst of an expansion under its new owner and CEO.
“I went to my first one in Las Vegas,” she said. “I really liked the culture and food and I thought it appeals to fellow millennials.”
Rice Bowls are currently having a moment and and it turns out people are really liking the concept for Asian food as well.
